Planning a surprise proposal can be a lot of work. Planning one while skiing in Colorado requires even more planning and logistics. So, I have created a Colorado Ski Proposal Guide to help! The first step to planning your Colorado ski proposal is reaching out to a local Colorado photographer. More importantly, one who also knows how to ski! If you want photos on the slopes, it is a good idea to work with someone who can get up and down the mountain with you! The next step is locking in a date. Colorado ski season usually goes from late October through May (give or take depending on the snow conditions). So, there are plenty of options for planning your surprise proposal trip!
After booking your ski proposal photographer, you will plan out your proposal. I will help you choose the best location, which I will talk about more in the next section. Colorado has so many gorgeous ski resorts with great spots for mountain-top proposals! After you decide on your location, we will also work to decide on the best time for you. Usually, timing of a surprise proposal will depend on what your typical ski day usually looks like. For example, you may want to do it first thing at the top of a lift. Or, if you typically stop at a mountain-top lodge for lunch, this can be a great place to bring your soon to be fiance to step aside for the proposal!
What does a Colorado Ski Proposal usually look like?
Once you have decided on the best time and location for your ski proposal, I will send you a detailed map and photos of the spot. This way you know exactly where to go! I also always send you a photo of what I will be wearing so you can look out for me. I ask the same of you so I can keep an eye out for you too. It is important that I know what you look like so I am ready and in position when I see you arrive.
On the surprise proposal day, I will be waiting in the area that we agree on. When you arrive to your spot, I usually recommend taking off your ski or snowboard. This will certainly make it easier to get down on one knee! If you need ideas on how to do that naturally, I can certainly share some tips! After you propose with a stunning mountain background, we will take lots of photos of you and your fiance! I usually start with some posed photos and then we hit the slopes for some action shots.
I offer both one and two hour ski proposal packages. The one hour is great if you don’t want any skiing in action photos and photos riding the lifts. However, most of my couples almost always opt for the two hour package to make the most of the experience! Why wouldn’t you want photos exploring the mountain together?!

Colorado Ski Proposal Guide – Best Locations
What are some of the best locations for a Colorado ski proposal? I usually recommend ski resorts that have great areas at the top of a lift, or next to a mountain-top lodge. Locations like this are easier to coordinate and less complicated than a random spot on a ski run. If you do have a particular spot on a run in mind, we can certainly make it work. But, especially if it is your first time at a particular ski resort, its easier not to get lost with a distinct location next to obvious landmarks. Some of my favorite ski resorts to photograph surprise proposals include, Vail, Copper Mountain, and Breckenridge. Of course I will go to any ski resort you would like! I am very familiar with most of Colorado’s ski areas!
The Ring!
One photo that you will definitely get during your proposal session, is a photo of the ring with your skis or snowboard! This is a fun way to show off that ring you worked so hard to design and pick out for your partner!
The Celebrations – Pop Some Bubbly!
Another fun addition to proposal sessions is a champagne pop! Whether you want champagne or a non-alcoholic option, this is a great way to add some celebration after your partner says yes. It also makes for some adorable photos!!! I always bring some plastic champagne flutes for you to use. I’m here to help you make the proposal day extra special. Including Family in you Surprise Ski Proposal
Often couples will want family or friends at their proposal. This is something that you can absolutely have on your special day! If everyone in the group skis and your partner is aware that family is on the ski trip, then you can have everyone head up the mountain together. If you are surprising your partner with their family being there, then I recommend having them wait at a base area or lodge. Then you can ski down to them after the proposal and meet everyone there.
Hitting the Slopes after you propose
Skiing and snowboarding together is the best way to celebrate your engagement! You will have the best time exploring the mountain and I will guide you to the most pretty spots for photos.

- How well should we ski for a ski proposal?
I highly recommend that both of you are confident green trail skiers in order to have a ski proposal. However, there are some locations that you can take a gondola to a mountain view even without skis. So, if you still want to propose at a ski resort, but don’t ski or snowboard well, I would be happy to discuss some options with you!
- What happens if the weather is bad?
There is no bad weather on a ski day! If it does snow on your proposal day, then you will get magical winter wonderland photos! Unless roads are closed and it is impossible for either of us to make it to the mountain, your proposal will usually occur on the planned date.
